Are vertical blinds outdated?
The 1990s office reputation is earned by cheap ones — thin fabric, plastic chains, louvres swinging in the draught. Modern fabrics in textured neutrals look considerably better than that association suggests, and on a wide opening they remain the sensible engineering answer. On a normal window, we would usually point you at something else.
What is the best blind for a sliding balcony door?
Verticals, in most cases. You rotate and draw a section to walk through rather than lifting the whole thing, which means the blind actually gets used through the day. They also handle a four or five metre span on a light top track, where a roller that wide becomes a heavy and awkward object.
Do vertical blinds block the light completely?
No. A dim-out fabric stops most of it, but the gaps between the louvres always pass a little, and there is no way around that with a louvred product. For a bedroom that needs to be dark, a blackout roller or lined curtains are the right answer.
What happens if one louvre gets damaged?
It is replaced on its own, in minutes, without the blind coming off the window. That is a real advantage in a rental, an office, or any house where a balcony door sees heavy traffic — keep a couple of spares from the original order and it is a five-minute fix.
Chains at the bottom or chainless?
Bottom chains keep the louvres hanging in line but catch on furniture and on people walking past. Chainless looks cleaner and is better where the blind is next to a sofa or a walkway, but the louvres swing more under an AC draught. On a balcony door we usually recommend chainless; on a fixed window, chains.

Why they persist on wide openings
Weight and span. A five-metre roller blind is a heavy, awkward object that needs a substantial tube. Five metres of vertical louvres is a light top track and a row of independent slats. For sliding doors onto a terrace, verticals also let you walk through by rotating and drawing a section rather than lifting the whole thing.
Light control
Rotate for glare, draw for access. Closed, a dim-out vertical fabric blocks most light but not all — the gaps between louvres always let a little through. As with zebra, this is a privacy product rather than a blackout one.
The reputation problem
Verticals carry a dated, institutional association from 1990s offices, and cheap ones — thin fabric, plastic chains, louvres that swing in the draught — earn it. Balcony doors and getting through them
The reason verticals survive on sliding doors is that they solve a traffic problem no other blind solves. You do not need to lift anything to get out to the terrace — rotate the louvres, draw a section to one side, walk through. A roller or a roman across the same opening has to be raised fully every time somebody goes out, and in practice it gets raised in the morning and left up all day, which defeats the point of fitting it. On a villa terrace door or an apartment balcony this alone usually decides it.
Louvres are replaceable, which matters more than it sounds
Each louvre hangs independently, so a single damaged one is swapped in minutes without the blind leaving the window. In a rented apartment, an office, or a house with a dog and a balcony door, that is the difference between a small repair and a new blind. Keep two spares from the original order and the blind outlives its reputation. Dim-out fabrics also give better light control than people expect, though as with zebra blinds the gaps between louvres mean this is a privacy product rather than a blackout one.
