What is the difference between a roman blind and a roller blind?
A roller winds onto a tube and is made from coated technical fabric. A roman draws up into soft horizontal folds and is made from ordinary curtain fabric, so it brings texture and warmth a roller cannot. The roller is cheaper, thinner and easier to clean; the roman looks like part of the room.
Can roman blinds be blackout?
Yes — the blackout is a separate lining sewn behind the face fabric, so you choose the look and the darkness independently. That is the real advantage over a blackout roller, where the coating limits you to whatever is available coated. See our blackout roman blinds.
How much of the window does a roman blind cover when raised?
More than people expect. The folds stack above the glass, and deeper folds stack higher — on a short window a generously folded roman can eat a quarter of the view. We size the fold depth to the drop so the stack sits above the frame wherever the wall allows it.

The best of both
Roman blinds are the answer when a room needs the warmth of fabric but has no wall space for a curtain to stack onto. A narrow bedroom window between two wardrobes, a bathroom, a landing — all places where a curtain has nowhere to go and a roller would look cold.
Fold depth and stack height
Deeper folds stack higher. On a short window a roman blind with generous folds can eat a quarter of the glass when fully raised, which defeats the point. We size the fold to the drop so the stack sits above the frame wherever the wall allows it.

A roman blind is the one blind type cut from ordinary curtain cloth, which means it can come from catalogues 301, 302, 303 or 401 — the same books we make curtains from. Width, weight and when to motorise
