Everything the layered pair does, with both curtains carried on wave tracks so the folds of the sheer and the blackout line up behind one another. When the blackout is stacked away the sheer still reads as a clean architectural run; when it is drawn, the room goes fully dark without losing the line.
It is the most expensive way we make a curtain and it is the one interior designers specify, because nothing else looks like it on a long window.

Do both layers have to be wave?
No, but they should match. A wave sheer in front of a pinch pleat blackout reads as two unrelated curtains sharing a window, particularly when both are open and you can see the two headings side by side. If the budget only stretches to wave on one layer, put it on the sheer — that is the layer you look at all day.
Will a double wave track fit my ceiling pocket?
That is exactly what we check before quoting. Two wave curtains need a double corded track with enough projection that the front sheer never rubs the blackout behind it, and many apartment ceiling pockets were built for a single track. Where the depth is not there we will tell you and offer the alternatives rather than forcing it.
Is this worth the cost over a normal layered pair?
On full-height glazing and long villa windows, we think so — at that scale the even ripple is what makes the window look designed. On a standard 2 by 3 metre apartment window, a conventional layered pair gives you most of the benefit for noticeably less. We will say which of the two your window is.
Can the two layers be motorised?
Yes, either together or independently. Independent is what most people end up wanting: the sheer drawn in the morning, the blackout on a timer for the afternoon heat, both closed at night. See motorised curtains for how the control works.
How much wall space does it need each side?
Around 15 to 20 cm past the glass on each side, so both layers stack clear of the window rather than sitting over it. Wave stacks tightly, so this is less than a pleated pair of the same width would need — but it is not nothing, and it is worth checking against the wall you actually have.

Matching the folds
The detail that makes this work is fold alignment. Both tracks are corded to the same repeat, so the sheer's S-curves sit directly in front of the blackout's rather than crossing them at random intervals. Get it wrong and you see a moiré of competing folds through the sheer. Getting it right is a measuring and setting-out job, not a fabric one, and it is why this is worth having fitted rather than attempted.
Clearance
Two wave tracks with deep folds need more space from the wall than any other set-up we install — allow around 15 cm. In a villa with a purpose-built curtain pocket this is straightforward. In an apartment with a shallow bulkhead it sometimes is not, and we would rather establish that at the survey than on installation day.
Motorising both
Both tracks can be motorised independently, which is where this really earns its price on a large window. One button takes the sheer across for daytime privacy; another closes the blackout for the evening. On a six-metre majlis opening, hand-drawing either layer is a job nobody wants to do twice a day.
Who this is for
Honestly: large windows and generous budgets. On a standard bedroom window the visual gain over a well-made pinch pleat pair is small and the cost difference is not. On a double-height majlis or a full glazed wall onto a terrace, nothing else comes close.
Why this ends up being the villa specification
Full-height glazing is the case wave was designed for. On a four-metre run the eye reads the rhythm of the folds before it reads the fabric, and a pleat heading at that scale looks fussy where a wave looks architectural. Doubling it — a chiffon sheer in front, a blackout behind, both on wave — gives you the two settings a villa reception actually uses: sheer alone through the day with the glare gone and the garden still visible, and both closed at night. It is the most expensive way we dress a window, and on the right window it is the one that looks like the room was designed rather than furnished.
Depth, and checking you have it
Two wave curtains need a double corded track and enough projection that the front sheer never touches the back blackout as it draws. That is more depth off the wall than a single track, and it is the detail that catches people out in an apartment with a shallow ceiling pocket — the pocket was built for one track, not two. We measure the pocket before quoting. Where the depth is genuinely not there, the honest alternatives are a single blackout on wave with no sheer, or a roller blind behind a single decorative curtain.

What you are paying for
Two curtains at 2.5x fullness plus a double wave track. The wave system itself costs more than a standard double track because the carriers create the curve. It is worth being clear about that before comparing quotes.
Depth is the constraint
Two wave channels need more bulkhead depth than two standard channels. Where the ceiling detail is shallow, a standard double track with a pinch pleat gets you the same function in less space.
Getting the stack right
