Why can I still see light around my blackout blind?
Because the light comes around the edges, not through the fabric. A reveal-fitted roller always leaves a gap at each side. Face-fixing it above and outside the reveal with a generous overlap solves most of it; aluminium side channels solve the rest.
Blackout roller or blackout curtain?
A roller costs less, projects less and wipes clean. A curtain is warmer, quieter in a room with hard surfaces, and softer to look at. In a small bedroom a roller disappears; in a living room a curtain usually wins. Many people fit a roller behind a decorative curtain and get both.
Do I need side channels for a nursery?
If the child naps in daylight, yes — that is exactly the case they exist for. Channels capture the fabric edge so there is no light gap at all, and the room goes properly black rather than very dark. For an adult bedroom that is dark by the time anyone uses it, face fix with a good overlap is usually enough.
Does a blackout blind keep the room cooler?

The edge gap is the whole problem
Blackout roller fabric blocks 100% of the light that hits it. The light you still see comes around the sides, and that gap is a fitting decision, not a fabric one. Reveal-fitted, expect a visible line down each edge. Face-fixed with 10 cm of overlap on every side, that mostly disappears. For a nursery or a shift worker who sleeps in daylight, we add aluminium side channels and the room goes genuinely black.
Where it beats a curtain
Cost, depth and cleaning. A roller costs less than a made curtain, projects about 8 cm instead of 15, and wipes clean rather than needing dry cleaning. In a small bedroom where a curtain would dominate the wall, a blackout roller does the job and disappears.
Where a curtain beats it
Warmth and sound. A roller is a single thin layer; a lined curtain is a heavy soft one. Rooms with a lot of hard surfaces echo, and fabric fixes that where a roller will not. If the room is for sleeping and also for living, a curtain usually wins.
Combining both

An aluminium channel fixed down each side of the window captures the edge of the fabric so there is no gap at all for light to come through. We recommend channels for nurseries, for anyone sleeping through daylight hours, and for home cinema rooms. On an ordinary bedroom where the curtain is closed at night anyway, face-fixing with a generous overlap is usually enough and the channels are money you do not need to spend.

Two things make blackout matter more here than in a cooler country. Sunrise is early and the light is hard, so a bedroom with an untreated window is bright well before six in summer.
