Soundproof Curtains in Dubai — What They Really Do
Curtains absorb sound reflecting inside a room. They do not block traffic noise through glass. Here is the difference, and what to specify if echo is your problem.
The honest answer first
Curtains do not soundproof a room. You will see "99% sound dampening" and "sound blocking" advertised across Dubai, and those claims do not survive contact with acoustics. Fabric is light and porous. Noise coming through a window is carried by the glass and the frame, and a curtain hanging in front of it cannot stop that.
What a heavy curtain genuinely does is absorb reflected sound inside the room. That is a real, measurable effect, and in the kind of hard-surfaced apartment most people live in here it is more noticeable than you might expect. It is just a different thing from soundproofing, and we would rather tell you which one you are buying.
What heavy curtains actually fix
A Dubai apartment is typically tile or stone floor, painted plaster, and a large glazed wall. Those surfaces reflect sound rather than absorbing it, so voices, television and footsteps bounce and the room sounds hard and echoey. The technical term is reverberation.
Hanging a dense, generously gathered curtain across a glazed wall cuts that reverberation. Conversations become easier to follow, television needs less volume, and the room sounds calmer. If your complaint is "my living room echoes" or "I can hear every sound from the next room through the open doorway", heavy curtains help.
If your complaint is "I can hear traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road through a closed window", they will not. That is transmission through glazing, and the answer is a secondary glazing panel or a laminated acoustic unit — a glazier's job, not ours.
What makes a curtain better at absorbing sound
Three things, in order of importance:
Mass. Heavier cloth absorbs more. Our plain blackout at 300 gsm is the heaviest fabric we carry and the one to choose for this.
Fullness. This matters more than most people realise. A curtain gathered at twice the track width has far more surface area and more air trapped in the folds than a flat panel of the same cloth. We make at 2× minimum; for acoustic purposes 2.5× is better still, and we will quote it if you ask.
Coverage. Floor to ceiling, wall to wall. A curtain that stops at the sill leaves most of the hard surface exposed. Running the track at ceiling level and 15 to 20 cm past each side of the glass covers considerably more area for a small amount of extra cloth.
A lined curtain performs better than an unlined one because the lining adds mass and traps a further air layer. Every blackout we make is lined by default.
Where it works best
Home offices and study rooms, where call quality depends on the room not echoing. Media rooms, where reverberation muddies dialogue. Majlis and large living rooms with a lot of glazing and stone. Apartments on a high floor where the noise problem is internal reflection rather than external traffic.
We also fit offices, clinics and meeting rooms across Dubai and Sharjah where the same problem shows up — a glass-walled meeting room is acoustically one of the worst spaces there is.
What it costs
Heavy blackout curtains start at AED 685 for a standard window, fitted, including the track. Specifying 2.5× fullness instead of 2× adds roughly a quarter to the fabric, and we will show you both figures so you can decide.

Combining curtains with other measures
If you want a genuinely quieter room, curtains are one layer of several. A rug on a tiled floor removes another large reflective surface. Soft furnishings help. Sealing the gap under a door stops more noise than most people expect. Secondary glazing is the only measure that meaningfully reduces traffic noise through a window.
We will tell you honestly whether curtains will solve your particular problem at the measuring visit. If the answer is no, we would rather say so than sell you a curtain that disappoints.
