A roller blind is a single piece of fabric wound on a tube. There is nothing to go wrong, it takes up almost no depth, and it comes in openness factors from a barely-there sunscreen to a full dim-out. For a kitchen, a study or an office it is usually the right answer before a curtain is even considered.

What openness factor should I choose for a roller blind?
For a desk facing a window we specify 3% most often — it removes most of the glare and heat while keeping a usable view out. 1% is darker and better on hard west-facing glass; 5% and 10% keep more of the view but let through enough light that a screen starts to wash out. If the room is for sleeping, you want a dim-out or blackout fabric, not a sunscreen at all.
Reveal fit or face fix — what is the difference?
Reveal fit sits inside the window opening, looks built-in and takes no wall space, but leaves a few millimetres of light down each edge. Face fix mounts above and outside the opening, covers that gap and blocks far more light, at the cost of projecting into the room. In practice: bedrooms get face fix, kitchens and offices usually get reveal fit.
How wide can a single roller blind be?
Up to about three metres in one panel. Wider than that and the tube starts to deflect and the fabric tracks off-centre, so we cover the opening with two or three blinds on a shared headrail. That also lets you adjust each section independently, which on a wide living-room window is genuinely useful.
Are roller blinds child safe?
They are as we fit them. Every corded blind we install gets a safety cleat or a breakaway connector as standard, and we do not leave a job without it. In a child's room a motorised or spring blind removes the cord question entirely, which is worth the difference.
How do I clean a roller blind?
A damp cloth, wiped downwards, and nothing more aggressive. Do not soak it — most roller fabric is coated, and water left sitting on the surface leaves a mark that will not come out. Kitchen blinds pick up cooking grease and want wiping monthly rather than annually.

Openness factor, and why it is the only spec that matters
Sunscreen roller fabric is rated by how much of its surface is open weave — 1%, 3%, 5%, 10%. A 3% fabric cuts most of the glare and heat while keeping a usable view out; a 10% keeps far more of the view but lets through enough light that a screen still washes out. For a desk facing a window in Business Bay, 3% is the number we specify most often.
Chain, spring or motor
A side chain is cheapest and most reliable. A spring mechanism is neater with no visible chain but has a shorter service life and cannot be adjusted once set. A motor is the right call on anything above head height or behind furniture. All corded blinds are fitted with a safety cleat or breakaway connector as standard.
Reveal fit or face fix
Fitted inside the window reveal a roller looks built-in and takes no wall, but it leaves a light gap of a few millimetres at each edge. Face-fixed above and outside the reveal it covers the gap entirely and blocks far more light, at the cost of projecting into the room. Bedrooms get face fix; kitchens and offices usually get reveal fit.

Width, joins and very wide openings
A roller is one piece of fabric on one tube, and that sets a practical limit. Past roughly three metres the tube deflects in the middle and the fabric starts to track off-centre, so a wide opening is covered with two or three blinds side by side on a shared headrail rather than one giant one. The joins are barely visible when the blinds are down and they let you adjust each section separately, which on a wide living-room window is more useful than it sounds. If you would rather have one uninterrupted piece across a balcony door, vertical blinds handle the span better.
Dust, AC draught and cleaning in a UAE home
Roller fabric is the easiest window covering to keep clean here, which is a large part of why we fit so many in kitchens and offices. It is a flat coated surface — a damp cloth, wiped downwards, and it is done. Two local cautions. Do not soak it: water sitting on a coated fabric leaves a tide mark that does not come out. And a blind hanging directly under an AC vent will move in the draught and tap against the reveal, which is a reveal-fit problem rather than a fabric one; face-fixing it or adding a bottom-bar clip stops the noise.
Where a roller fits in the budget
A roller blind is normally the least expensive way to dress a window properly, and on a kitchen or study window it does the whole job on its own. In bedrooms it is often used behind a curtain — the roller darkens, the curtain softens — which costs less than a layered sheer-and-blackout pair and is a common fit in apartments across Dubai and Sharjah.

Inside or outside the reveal
Inside looks neat and keeps the sill usable, but leaves a small gap each side. Outside the reveal, overlapping the opening, is what gives real light control. For a bedroom, fit outside; for a kitchen where tidiness matters more than darkness, inside is usually right.
Width has a limit
Past a certain span a single tube becomes heavy to operate and can deflect in the middle. Two blinds meeting is better than one oversized one, and it also halves what you are lifting.
Chains and children
Where a chain can be reached, choose a cordless mechanism or motorise it.
Cleaning
Dust with a soft brush along the roll rather than washing. Most roller fabrics do not enjoy being taken down and rehung repeatedly.
