Blackout or Sheer? A Straight Answer for UAE Homes
This question comes up on almost every home visit, usually phrased as if it is either-or. It rarely is. Blackout and sheer solve different problems, and in most UAE homes the honest answer is that you want both — on the same window, on a double track.
What blackout actually does
A blackout curtain blocks light through the fabric completely, and with it most of the direct solar heat. In a bedroom that means you can sleep past sunrise in June. In a living room it means the television is watchable at three in the afternoon and the room does not turn into a greenhouse.
What it does not do is give you a usable daytime setting. It is open or it is closed. Rooms fitted with blackout alone tend to sit with the curtains shut and the lights on, which is an expensive way to own a window.
What sheer actually does
Chiffon sheer diffuses light rather than blocking it. The room stays bright but the glare goes, and the harsh bar of sunlight across the floor becomes an even wash. During daylight it also screens the room from outside, because the exterior is brighter than the interior.
Two things it does not do. It does not block heat in any meaningful way — the energy passes straight through. And it does not give privacy at night; once your lights are on and the sky is dark, the effect reverses completely and a sheer becomes close to transparent from outside. People on ground floors discover this on the first evening.

When one is genuinely enough
Blackout only makes sense in a room that has no daytime use and needs to be dark — a nursery, a home cinema, a bedroom for someone on night shifts. Sheer only makes sense on a high window nobody overlooks, a stairwell, or a dining room used mainly in the evening with the lights low.
Everywhere else, the two together on a double track is the arrangement that gets used. It costs more than one layer and less than twice as much, and it is the upgrade customers most often say afterwards they should have done from the start.
A note on choosing the pair
Do not match them. The sheer is visible all day; the blackout mostly when closed. A light, neutral chiffon in front will sit happily with almost any blackout behind, and it keeps the room feeling bright when everything is stacked open. If you want a strong colour or a jacquard weave, put it on the blackout and keep the sheer quiet.
