Blinds work where curtains cannot

A blind sits inside the reveal and takes up almost no wall. That matters in a compact apartment kitchen, behind a desk, or on a bathroom window where fabric would stay damp, and on a wide sliding door where vertical louvres are the only sensible span. It also matters on the tall, narrow windows common in newer Dubai towers, where a full curtain would look heavy and out of proportion.

Choosing between the types

Roller blinds are the simplest and the most forgiving — one flat piece of fabric on a tube, available in blackout, sunscreen or translucent. Zebra blinds layer opaque and sheer bands so you can tune the light by sliding one over the other. Roman shades fold into soft horizontal pleats and read much closer to a curtain, which is why they suit bedrooms and living rooms. Venetian blinds, in aluminium or wood, tilt so you can throw light at the ceiling while keeping the view out of the room.

Heat, glare and the office problem

Glare on a screen is the complaint we hear most from offices in Business Bay and Al Qasimia. A sunscreen roller at a 3–5% openness factor cuts the glare and the solar gain while keeping enough of the view that the room does not feel boxed in. For meeting rooms that need to go properly dark for a presentation, a blackout roller in the same housing is the usual answer.

Fitting and maintenance

Blinds are fitted to the reveal or face-fixed to the wall above it, depending on the depth you have. Cleaning is a wipe with a damp cloth for roller and venetian, and a vacuum brush for roman and sheer roman blinds. Child safety is not optional in the UAE — every corded blind we fit leaves with a cleat or a breakaway chain fitted as standard.

Reveal fix or face fix, and why we measure three times

A blind is either fitted inside the window reveal or face-fixed to the wall above it, and the choice is usually made for you by how deep the reveal is. A roller needs enough depth to take the tube and its brackets without the fabric fouling the frame or the handle; a roman needs more again, because the folds stack at the top and that stack has to live somewhere. Where the reveal is too shallow, face fixing is not a downgrade — it covers the frame as well as the glass, which usually blocks more light, not less.

Inside a reveal, the width is measured at the top, the middle and the bottom, and the smallest of the three is the one we work from. Openings are rarely square, especially in older Sharjah villa stock, and a blind cut to the widest measurement is a blind that jams. The same applies to the drop, measured at both sides. Getting this wrong is not adjustable afterwards the way a curtain hem is, which is the main reason blinds are worth having measured rather than ordered from your own numbers.

How these fabrics behave in Gulf conditions

Two things age a blind here, and neither is sunlight on its own. The first is dust. Air conditioning moves fine dust continuously and it settles on any horizontal surface, which is precisely what a venetian slat is; that is why venetians need wiping more often than anything else on this page and why a roller, with one flat vertical face, stays looking clean for far longer. The second is heat cycling at the glass. The gap between an air-conditioned room and the surface of west-facing glass in August is severe, and cheap coated blackout fabric responds to it by going brittle and eventually cracking along the fold lines. It is the reason we do not sell the cheapest coated roller on the market.

Near the coast, add salt to the dust. Aluminium venetians and metal components handle it better than anything with a steel spring in it, and are the sensible specification for a window that gets opened onto sea air.

Blinds and curtains on the same window

These are not alternatives as often as people assume. A blackout roller in the reveal with a chiffon sheer or a decorative curtain on the wall outside it is a common and very effective combination: the blind does the light control, the curtain does the softness and the acoustics, and neither has to compromise for the other. It is also the cheapest route to a genuinely dark bedroom in a room whose window is too shallow to take a heavy curtain well.

Questions

Blinds & Shades — your questions

Which blind is best for an office?
A sunscreen roller at a 3% openness factor, in almost every case. It kills the screen glare and most of the solar gain while keeping a usable view out, so the room does not feel boxed in. For meeting rooms that need to go dark for presentations, add a blackout roller in the same housing.
Are blinds cheaper than curtains?
Usually, yes, particularly roller blinds. Roman blinds are the exception — they are made from curtain fabric with a lining and can cost more than a simple curtain. The bigger difference is depth: a blind takes about 8 cm of wall, a curtain 15 or more.
Are your blinds child-safe?
Every corded blind we fit leaves with a safety cleat or a breakaway connector fitted as standard. It is not an upgrade and we do not hand over a job without it.

Blinds in a UAE home: which type suits which window

What blinds cost in Dubai, and where they beat curtains

Window blinds in Dubai are priced per opening, and the figure moves with the size of the opening, the fabric or slat you choose and whether the blind is fitted inside the reveal or on the face of the wall. That last choice affects blinds Dubai price less than it affects the result — a reveal-fitted blackout blind leaves light down both sides. Anyone comparing window blinds price in the UAE should also compare what is included: our quotation covers the blind, the fittings and the installation. Blinds are the better answer to a kitchen, a bathroom or a small window where a curtain would spend its life stacked across the glass; where a room wants softness or real darkness, curtains usually win. The best blinds in Dubai for a given room are simply the ones matched to the job — which is a five-minute conversation at the window.

Blinds and curtains solve the same problem in different ways, and the window usually decides which is right rather than taste. A blind sits inside or tight against the opening and takes almost no wall; a curtain needs somewhere to stack when it is open. That single difference settles most cases before style enters the conversation.

Where a blind is the better answer

  • Kitchens and bathrooms. Less fabric near cooking and moisture, and a wipeable surface is easier to keep.
  • Small windows and deep reveals. A curtain on a small opening spends most of its life stacked across the glass.
  • Where furniture sits against the wall. A blind needs no stack space, so a sofa or a desk can sit under the window.
  • Offices and studies. Slats and banded fabrics let you cut glare on a screen without losing the whole view.

Where a room wants softness, or the window is very wide, or you want two layers of light control, curtains generally do it better. Plenty of homes use both — blinds in the service rooms, curtains in the living space.

Roller blinds vs roman blinds, and the rest of the range

A roller is the simplest mechanism and the least intrusive when it is up; in a blackout fabric it is the usual answer for a bedroom that needs the room dark. A roman folds into soft horizontal pleats and reads as fabric rather than hardware, which suits a living room where a roller would look utilitarian. A zebra alternates sheer and solid bands, so zebra blinds in the UAE are popular for exactly this: aligning the bands gives you privacy and offsetting them gives you a view — useful where light changes through the day. Vertical louvres remain the practical choice for a wide sliding door, because they stack tightly and can be angled rather than simply raised. Venetian slats give the finest control of direction, which is why they persist in offices.

Blinds inside or outside the window reveal

A blind is fitted either inside the reveal or outside it, on the face of the wall. Inside looks neater and keeps the sill usable; it also leaves a small gap at each side, which is where light gets in. If you are choosing blackout blinds for a bedroom in Dubai, fitting it outside the reveal with a generous overlap does far more than upgrading the fabric. This is the single most common disappointment with blackout blinds and it is a fitting choice, not a fabric one.

Practical points worth knowing before you order

  • Very wide windows. Past a certain width a single roller becomes heavy to operate and the tube can deflect. Two blinds meeting in the middle is usually better than one oversized one.
  • Cords and children. Where a chain could be reached, cordless or motorised is worth the difference. Motorised blinds remove the chain entirely.
  • Heat. A blind stops light at the glass, which is where you want to stop it, but a single fabric layer does less about heat than a lined curtain. On a west-facing room, think about the timing as much as the product.
  • Cleaning. Most blinds want dusting rather than washing; fabric blinds do not enjoy being taken down repeatedly.

Measuring is ours to get right

Blinds are cut to one opening and are far less forgiving than curtains — a centimetre out on a reveal fit is visible, and it cannot be adjusted afterwards the way a hem can. That is why we measure rather than ask for numbers, and why the visit is free whether or not you order. If you are weighing blinds against curtains for the same room, say so on the visit: it is a five-minute conversation standing in front of the window, and it is worth having before anything is cut. The fitters noticed my ceiling was not level and adjusted the track so the curtains hang straight anyway. That is the kind of thing you only find out later if it is done badly.

Went for the double layer after seeing the books at home. Sheer during the day, blackout at night, and the two tracks were installed level to the millimetre. Price on the quote was the price I paid.

The consultant brought all four catalogue books to the flat. Seeing the fabric against my own window in daylight completely changed which colour I picked — the one I chose online looked grey in my living room.

I only wanted sheers for the living room. They did not try to upsell me into blackout, which I appreciated. The chiffon softens the light beautifully and the room still feels bright.

Floor-to-ceiling glass on two sides. The sheers cut the glare without making the apartment dark, and the fitters got the drop right to the centimetre above the floor.

Very good work and a fair price. The only reason for four stars is that the first fitting slot was moved by a day. Once they arrived it took under three hours for four windows and they cleaned up after themselves.

Pinch pleat in the formal sitting room. The folds are even across the whole width, which is the part cheap curtains always get wrong. They hung and dressed them properly before leaving.
