A tie-back does two things: it holds the curtain clear of the glass so the window actually lets light in when open, and it gives the drop a shape instead of a straight vertical line. It is a small, cheap item that changes how a window reads more than its price suggests.

We fit curtain tie-backs and holdbacks across Dubai and the UAE — rope and tassel, fabric bands cut from your own curtain material, and metal holdbacks. They are chosen at the home visit, against the actual fabric in the actual light, because this is the detail that most often goes wrong when it is picked from a photograph.

How high should a curtain tie-back be fitted?
Around two-thirds of the way down the drop for a standard window — a long sweep above, a short fall below. On a very tall villa window the tie usually moves higher than that, because what you are matching is the proportion your eye reads rather than a fixed measurement. We mark the position and let you look at it before we drill.
Can I have tie-backs made from my own curtain fabric?
Yes, and it is the neatest option. We cut the band from the same roll as the curtain, so the shade matches exactly rather than nearly. Fabric bands suit contemporary rooms where you want the tie to disappear into the curtain instead of being a decorative feature.
Do wave curtains need tie-backs?
No, and we would talk you out of them. A wave heading is designed to stack into an even concertina at the end of the track, and pulling it sideways into a tie destroys the regular fold that you paid for. Wave and eyelet both hold their shape without help. Tie-backs belong with pencil pleat and pinch pleat.
Tie-back or metal holdback — which is more practical?
A metal holdback, in any room where the curtain gets moved constantly. There is nothing to tie, nothing to lose, and a child can use it. Rope and tassel is the more formal, more decorative choice and suits a majlis or a reception where the curtain is dressed and left. Fabric bands sit between the two.
Should I tie back both the sheer and the blackout?
Just the blackout. Leaving the sheer hanging is the setting most homes here use all day: daylight through the sheer, glare cut, privacy from the building opposite, and the blackout held clear at the sides ready for the evening. Tying both leaves the window bare and gives up the daytime privacy.

Height is the whole trick

The classic position is roughly two-thirds of the way down the drop. That gives a long sweep above the tie and a short fall below it, which is the proportion that reads as deliberate. Tied at the halfway point the curtain looks static and blocky; tied too low it looks like the fabric is being restrained rather than dressed. On a very tall villa window the two-thirds rule stops working and the tie moves higher, because the eye reads the proportion, not the measurement.

We mark the hook position on the wall, hang the curtain, and let you stand back and look at it before anything is drilled. It costs nothing to move a pencil mark and it is a nuisance to move a hole.

The three types

Rope and tassel. The traditional choice, and it belongs with formal pinch pleat in a reception or majlis. The tassel carries weight, so it holds the curtain in a defined curve rather than letting it slump.

Fabric bands. A band made from the curtain material itself, usually stiffened and often finished with a small buckle or a covered magnet. This is the quiet contemporary option: it disappears into the curtain instead of announcing itself, and because it is cut from the same roll it matches the shade exactly.

Metal holdbacks. A fixed arm mounted on the wall that the curtain tucks behind. There is nothing to tie and nothing to lose, which makes it the practical choice in a room where the curtain is moved several times a day, in a child's room, and anywhere the curtain would otherwise be pulled around by hand every morning. Finish it to match the pole or the room's other metalwork.

Which headings want a tie-back, and which do not

Pencil pleat and pinch pleat gather into a soft column when tied and look better for it. Wave does not: the heading is engineered to stack in an even concertina against the end of the track, and pulling it sideways into a tie collapses exactly the fold the system exists to produce. Eyelet gathers into deep even folds on its own and rarely needs help. If your curtains are wave or eyelet, the honest advice is to skip the tie-back and let the heading do its job.

Sheers and blackouts on a layered window

On a double track carrying a sheer in front of a blackout, tie back the blackout and leave the sheer hanging. That is the daytime setting most homes actually live in — light coming through the sheer, glare cut, the room not visible from the building opposite, and the blackout held out of the way at the sides ready for the evening. Tying both makes the window look undressed and gives up the privacy.

Fitting and the wall behind it

A tie-back hook takes a real sideways load every time the curtain is pulled into it, so the fixing matters as much as it does for a bracket. Into block or concrete it is straightforward. Into a hollow partition it needs a proper cavity fixing. Where the reveal is finished in marble or stone — common in villa receptions here — we fix into the wall beside the stone rather than drilling the stone face.

Before you decide

Worth reading first

Tie-backs and holdbacks: where the curtain sits when it is open

A tie-back is not only decoration. It decides how much glass a stacked curtain covers and how the fabric falls when it is open.

Height changes the shape

Tied high, the curtain flares at the bottom and shows more floor length; tied low, it pinches and shows more glass. Roughly two-thirds down the drop is the usual starting point, adjusted to the window.

Rope, fabric or metal holdback

A rope-and-tassel is traditional and soft. A metal holdback holds the fabric further off the glass, which lets more light in and suits a heavy curtain that would crush against a tie.

When to skip them

On a wave or a pinch pleat that stacks tidily against the wall, a tie-back adds nothing. They earn their place on fuller, softer curtains and on single-panel windows drawn to one side.

What curtain tie backs cost in Dubai, and what the quote covers

Anyone pricing curtain tie backs dubai is really pricing three things: the fabric or material, the making, and the fitting. We quote them as one figure per window rather than as a fabric price with extras arriving later, so the number you approve includes the track or fixings and the installation. Some people search for this as curtain holdbacks uae; it is the same product. Prices move with the size of the opening and, for curtains, with the fullness the heading needs — which is why two quotations for the same window can differ without either being wrong. The price estimator gives you a figure for your own measurements before anyone visits, and the measuring visit itself is free across Dubai, Sharjah and the northern emirates.

Rope-and-tassel tie backs in Dubai remain the most common choice on fuller curtains, with metal holdbacks where the fabric is heavy.

The dressing of the pleats after hanging is what I noticed. They tied them and left them to set, then came back to release them. Nobody else offered that.

Fitted nearly a year ago. The colour has not faded on the window that gets direct afternoon sun, which is what I was most worried about.

Two tracks in the bedroom, sheer in front. The sun comes straight into that window in the morning and now it is completely manageable.

Ordered on a Monday, fitted on the Friday. Five days from measuring to hanging, exactly as they said. The blackout is genuine — the room is dark at noon.

My daughter used to wake at 5:30 with the sun. First morning after the fitting she slept until 7. That alone was worth it. Fabric is from book 303 and it feels much heavier than what I was shown elsewhere.

Two bedrooms and the majlis, all catalogue 302. The team measured on the Saturday and fitted the following Thursday. What I did not expect was how much cooler the west bedroom is now in the afternoon — the AC stopped running constantly.

The fitters noticed my ceiling was not level and adjusted the track so the curtains hang straight anyway. That is the kind of thing you only find out later if it is done badly.
