The obvious benefit is convenience. The one people notice a month later is heat. A motorised curtain track on a timer closes the blackout before the afternoon sun hits the west face of the building, so the room never gets hot in the first place and the AC is not fighting a losing battle at four in the afternoon. Over a Dubai summer that is a real number on the DEWA bill.
Every motor we fit — on curtains or on blinds — ships with a handheld remote. From there you can add a wall switch, a phone app over Wi-Fi, scheduling by sunrise and sunset, or voice through Alexa, Google Home or Siri. Systems that already run on a home automation controller can usually be integrated rather than replaced.
If your curtains are in good condition and hanging on a decent track, a motor can often be retrofitted to what is already there — considerably cheaper than starting again. Where the existing track is a light plastic rail, it will not carry a motorised carriage and we would replace it with a proper aluminium track. The survey tells us which of the two you are looking at, and we say so before quoting.
Most motors need a socket within reach of the track. In a finished apartment, where chasing a wall is not an option, a rechargeable lithium motor solves it — a charge lasts several months on typical use. In a villa still under fit-out, running a spur to the track head is cleaner and permanent. Both are quoted honestly; we do not push wiring work that the building will not allow.
We would rather talk somebody out of a motor than fit one that sits unused. A single bedroom window you walk past twice a day does not need one. What does: glazing you cannot reach without a ladder, stairwell windows, double-height majlis glass, a run of curtain behind a fixed sofa, and any window where the honest answer to “do you actually close this every day?” is no. The last one is the real test. A curtain that is too much trouble to draw is a curtain that is not doing its job, and the heat argument only works if the cloth is actually across the glass when the sun is on it.
The second case is scale. Once a home has a dozen windows on the same face of the building, closing them one at a time stops happening. A single scene that draws the whole west side at three in the afternoon is a different proposition from a motor on one window, and it is where most of the motorised work we quote ends up.
A curtain motor sits at the end of the track and pulls a belt or a cord that drags the leading carrier along it. A blind motor is a tube motor: it lives inside the roller tube itself and turns it, so nothing is visible at all. That difference decides what can be retrofitted. A roller blind can often take a tube motor into the existing tube if the tube diameter suits it; a curtain needs a track built to take a carriage, which a light plastic rail is not.
Limits — the fully-open and fully-closed positions — are set on site once the curtain is hanging, because they depend on the finished cloth and not on the plan. If you later change the fabric for something with a different heading, the limits usually want resetting; it is a two-minute job and worth asking for rather than living with a curtain that stops short.
The wiring question is settled by the building, not by preference. A villa still in fit-out can have a spur run to the track head, which is permanent and invisible and the best result. A finished apartment usually cannot: chasing a wall is either forbidden by the building management or so disruptive it defeats the point. That is what rechargeable lithium motors are for, and it is why they have become the default answer in towers rather than a compromise. They are charged from a lead you plug in occasionally, in the same way a cordless vacuum is.
Ask about manual override before you buy anything, from us or anyone else. A motorised curtain you cannot move by hand is a curtain that is stuck open the day the motor or the power fails.

Motorising a window is easy to sell as a gadget and easy to regret when it is fitted for the wrong reason. It earns its place in three situations: where a curtain is genuinely hard to reach, where the timing matters more than the convenience, and where there are enough windows that doing them by hand is a daily chore. Everywhere else, a well-fitted manual track is a better use of the money.
For curtains, the motor drives a belt inside the track and moves a carrier along it; the curtain is attached to that carrier and travels with it. For roller blinds, the motor sits inside the tube the fabric rolls onto. Both are quiet in normal use, and both have a manual override — a curtain can be pulled by hand and a blind can be operated if the motor fails, which is worth confirming for any system you are offered.
A battery motor is charged periodically and needs no wiring, which makes it the practical option when you retrofit motorised curtains in a finished home and in a rental where you cannot run cable. A hardwired motor never needs charging and suits a fit-out, a new build, or any window you would rather not think about again. The honest trade-off is that batteries are convenient to install and inconvenient to maintain, and wiring is the opposite. On a window that is hard to reach — which is often exactly why it is being motorised — recharging a battery is the same ladder problem you were trying to avoid.
A remote handles most homes. A schedule is where motorisation stops being a convenience and starts doing something a manual curtain cannot: closing against the afternoon sun on a fixed timer. Integration with a wider smart-home system is possible and worth asking about specifically, because it depends on what you already run. It is also worth deciding how many windows sit on one control: a single button that closes a whole elevation is more useful day to day than individual control of each window.
Fabric choice does not change when a track is motorised — the same four catalogues apply, and the same fullness rules.
