Curtain Track or Curtain Pole? How to Choose

A white ceiling-mounted curtain track with the curtain heading hanging from it

A track is a channel — usually aluminium, usually white — that the curtain hangs inside on gliders. A pole is a round rod on two brackets with rings on it. Both hold a curtain up. They are not interchangeable, and in most UAE homes the window has already made the decision.

When it has to be a track

  • Floor-to-ceiling glazing. There is no wall above the glass to put brackets on. The track goes into the ceiling or the bulkhead, and a pole has nowhere to live. This covers most apartments in Dubai — see curtains fitted in Dubai.
  • Anything layered. A sheer in front and a blackout behind needs two channels close together. Double tracks are ordinary; double poles look like scaffolding.
  • Heavy blackout on a wide opening. Weight on a long pole makes it bow in the middle. A track carries the load along its whole length.
  • Motorisation. The motor drives a belt inside the channel. Motorised curtains are track systems, essentially always.
  • A curved or bay window. Track bends. Poles do not.

When a pole is the better answer

  • A standard window with wall above it, in a room where you want the hardware to be part of the look. A black pole with rings against a pale wall is a deliberate line; a track is meant to disappear.
  • Eyelet curtains. The eyelets thread onto the pole — that heading needs one.
  • Where you want the curtain to sit proud of a deep reveal, which is common in older Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain buildings with thick plastered walls.

The measurement that catches people out

Whichever you choose, the hardware should run past the window on both sides — far enough that the open curtain stacks against the wall and not across the glass. Skip that and you lose a slice of daylight every morning and a slice of the view permanently. It also means the width you are quoting on is the track width, not the window width, which is the same point that drives what curtains cost.

What the ceiling will take

This is a visit-day question, not a catalogue question. A concrete slab takes a ceiling-fixed track anywhere. A false ceiling needs the fixing to reach something solid above it, or a recessed pelmet detail designed in. A shallow bulkhead may not leave enough depth for a double track at all. An AC vent directly above the window changes where the track can go — and there is nearly always a solution, but it is chosen standing in the room.

What we fit

Both, and the choice is made at the measuring visit rather than sold in advance. Our curtain tracks and rails and curtain rods pages cover the range, and every quotation includes whichever the window needs along with the fabric and the fitting. Buying the hardware with the curtain

The curtain track vs curtain pole choice is usually made by the wall above the window.

Tracks and poles are quoted with the window rather than bought separately, because the hardware is specified against the weight of the cloth. If you are pricing curtain tracks in Dubai on their own, that is usually a sign the fabric quote has left something out. See tracks and rails and curtain rods.

Floor-to-ceiling glass on two sides. The sheers cut the glare without making the apartment dark, and the fitters got the drop right to the centimetre above the floor.

Very good work and a fair price. The only reason for four stars is that the first fitting slot was moved by a day. Once they arrived it took under three hours for four windows and they cleaned up after themselves.

Pinch pleat in the formal sitting room. The folds are even across the whole width, which is the part cheap curtains always get wrong. They hung and dressed them properly before leaving.

Good blinds at a good price. I would have liked a wider colour choice in the roller range, but for the blackout function they do exactly what was promised.

They came all the way to RAK for two bedrooms and still gave me the same fixed price. Fitted in one visit.

Sheers for a small apartment on a budget. They were honest that I did not need a heavier fabric for a north-facing room instead of selling me the expensive book.

Fair work for a fair price. Delivery was a day later than first indicated but they called ahead rather than leaving me waiting.

Book 303 jacquard in the majlis. Guests keep asking where they came from. The pattern lines up across the two panels, which I did not think to ask about and they did anyway.

Simple eyelet curtains for a rented flat, and they were happy to do a small job without making me feel like a small customer.

Rollers for the kitchen and the study. Wipeable, compact, and the chain is on the side I asked for. Small thing, but they asked first instead of guessing.

I wanted something light for the majlis that still gave privacy from the street. The chiffon does both, and it does not look cheap up close.

Motorised blinds on the high windows in the stairwell — the ones I could never reach. Set to open at seven and close at sunset. Installed cleanly with no visible wiring.
