How to Stop Curtains Fading in UAE Sunlight

A living room window with a sheer curtain drawn across the glass and heavier curtains held open at both sides

Fading is ultraviolet light breaking the dye in the fibre. The Gulf gets a great deal of it, for more months of the year than most places, and a west-facing window takes the worst of it every afternoon. You cannot stop it. You can decide how long it takes to become visible.

The lining does the work, not the face fabric

The side of the curtain you look at is not the side taking the beating. The side facing the glass is. This is why a lined or blackout-backed curtain outlasts an unlined one so comfortably: the backing takes the UV and the face fabric sits in shade. It is also why the first sign of fading is usually a pale stripe down the leading edge — the part that sits in the light when the curtain is open.

Colours that hold, colours that go

  • Mid neutrals hold best. Beiges, greiges, oatmeals, stones — they have less dye load to lose and what they do lose reads as a slightly softer version of the same colour.
  • Strong saturated colours show it first. Reds and deep blues lose their punch visibly. A faded navy looks tired in a way a faded sand does not.
  • Very dark shades absorb more heat, which ages the fibre alongside the UV.

Our four books run heavily to the neutral end, which is not an accident — it is what survives here. You can see the full range in the fabrics catalogues.

Two layers beat one

The most effective thing you can do is put a chiffon sheer in front of the glass and keep the heavier curtain held open behind it. The sheer takes the direct sun during the day, costs a fraction of the blackout to replace, and diffuses the light rather than blocking it. The expensive curtain only comes across at night, when there is no UV to speak of. Blackout or sheer goes through which rooms this suits.

Habits that add years

  • Draw the sheer, not the blackout, during the day. Free, and the single biggest difference.
  • Rotate panels between windows if two rooms take very different light — the fading then evens out instead of announcing itself on one window.
  • Keep them off the glass. Fabric pressed against hot glass ages faster. A track set far enough out from the window gives it air.
  • Take the dust off regularly. Dust holds heat and grit against the fibre. How to clean curtains without taking them down covers the method.

What fading is not

A curtain that has gone patchy, stiff or brittle in one area is usually not fading — that is heat and moisture damage, often where a curtain sits against glass with an AC blowing across it. And a curtain that looks different in two rooms may simply be two dye lots. It is worth ordering a whole home at once for that reason alone; we cut from the same roll where we can.

Choosing shades that hold up

If you want to stop curtains fading, the sheer in front is worth more than any fabric upgrade.

The practical version of everything above: pick mid neutrals, put a chiffon sheer in front of the expensive layer, and keep the fabric off hot glass. All four catalogues run heavily to the neutral end for exactly this reason, and a free visit lets you judge a shade in your own light rather than under a showroom lamp.

The short answer to how to stop curtains fading: let a sheer take the sun, choose mid neutrals, and keep fabric off hot glass.

Excellent fabric and fitting. Communication in the week before the visit could have been slightly better, but the work itself is faultless.

Full villa, eleven windows. They handled it in one day with three fitters. Having their own warehouse stock clearly made the difference on the timeline.

The dressing of the pleats after hanging is what I noticed. They tied them and left them to set, then came back to release them. Nobody else offered that.

Fitted nearly a year ago. The colour has not faded on the window that gets direct afternoon sun, which is what I was most worried about.

Two tracks in the bedroom, sheer in front. The sun comes straight into that window in the morning and now it is completely manageable.

Ordered on a Monday, fitted on the Friday. Five days from measuring to hanging, exactly as they said. The blackout is genuine — the room is dark at noon.

My daughter used to wake at 5:30 with the sun. First morning after the fitting she slept until 7. That alone was worth it. Fabric is from book 303 and it feels much heavier than what I was shown elsewhere.

Good price, good fabric and a team that turned up when they said. There is not much more to ask for.

Two bedrooms and the majlis, all catalogue 302. The team measured on the Saturday and fitted the following Thursday. What I did not expect was how much cooler the west bedroom is now in the afternoon — the AC stopped running constantly.

Wave track along a six-metre window. The folds stay perfectly uniform whether open or closed. It is the detail that makes the whole room look finished.
