The eyelet heading suits sheer fabric for a purely practical reason: chiffon needs washing more often than any other curtain, because it sits in the path of the AC and catches every bit of dust in the air. Rings lift off a pole in seconds, which turns a wash from a job into a nuisance.

Do eyelet curtains need a pole?
Yes. The pole passes straight through the metal rings punched into the heading — there is nothing to hook onto a track. If your window has a ceiling pocket and you want a track, pencil pleat, pinch pleat or wave will give you a similar look with different detailing.
Will the eyelets tear the sheer fabric?
Not if the heading is reinforced properly. Chiffon on its own is far too light to carry a punched ring, so we bond a stiffened band into the top of the curtain before the eyelets go in. That band is what carries the load. It is also the part a cheap eyelet curtain skimps on, and it is why they fail at the top edge.
How much light comes through the top?
A little always does, between the pole and the top of the fabric. On a sheer that is irrelevant — the whole curtain passes light anyway. It only matters if you are using eyelet for a blackout layer, which is a different conversation covered on our eyelet blackout page.
Can I wash eyelet sheers at home?
Gently, yes, and this is one of the practical advantages of the heading — you can lift the curtain off the pole yourself without tools or a ladder mission. Cool wash, no spin to speak of, and rehang while slightly damp so the weight of the water pulls the folds straight.
Do eyelet sheers work as the front layer of a pair?
They can, on a double pole. It projects further from the wall than a double track does, so check you have the wall space above and beside the window. In a compact apartment reception a double track with a wave or pleat heading is usually the neater answer.

Reinforcement is what stops them tearing
Punching a metal ring through chiffon without support will eventually tear it — the fabric is not strong enough to carry its own weight at eight small points. Every eyelet we set goes through a concealed reinforcement band bonded into the heading, which spreads the load across the whole top edge. This is invisible once hung and it is the difference between a sheer that lasts five years and one that starts fraying in a season.
Light through the top gap
The scalloping between rings that makes eyelets unsuitable for bedroom blackout is irrelevant here — a sheer is not blocking light in the first place. If anything the effect is pleasant, because the gathered top catches a little extra brightness.
As the front layer
Eyelet sheers pair with an eyelet blackout on a double pole, and the two sets of rings look intentional side by side. What does not work is an eyelet sheer in front of a wave or pinch pleat blackout — the headings read as a mistake. Keep both layers on the same heading, or use a track set-up for both.
Washing
Lift off the pole, cold gentle cycle, minimal spin, re-hang damp. The rings are fine in a domestic machine but put the panel in a wash bag so the metal does not knock around the drum.
Choosing the ring finish
The eyelets are visible hardware on a sheer curtain in a way they are not on a heavy blackout — the fabric is light and pale, so the rings read as a row of punctuation across the top of the window. Match them to the pole and to the other metalwork in the room rather than to the fabric: brushed nickel with modern chrome fittings, matt black in a room with black window frames, antique brass in a more traditional villa reception. It is a small decision that is very hard to undo, because the eyelets are punched into the curtain at manufacture.
Eyelet or tab top
Both hang on a pole and both are informal, but they behave differently. Eyelet rings glide, so the curtain draws easily and holds a deep even fold. Tab top loops grip the pole and have to be walked across, which is fine on a guest room and irritating on a window you open daily — it is also the cheaper of the two.
Where eyelet sheers work best
Rooms with wall space above the window and a pole you are happy to see. In practice that means villas and townhouses more often than apartments, where a ceiling curtain pocket usually points towards a track and therefore towards a pleat or a wave heading instead. Eyelet also suits a window you open often: the curtain slides on the pole with very little friction, so drawing it back to reach a balcony door is a one-handed job.

Good for a second layer on a pole
Where a room already has a pole and a heavier curtain, adding an eyelet sheer on a second, slimmer pole is often simpler than retrofitting a double track. It gives you the daytime privacy layer without touching the ceiling.
Movement and weight
Light fabric on rings moves easily, which is pleasant near a balcony door and less so beside an air-conditioning vent that keeps it drifting. Where a sheer is against a vent, a track with gliders holds it steadier.
Fullness
