Tab tops carry the curtain on loops of its own fabric, sewn along the heading and threaded onto a pole. There is no metal, no tape and no hook — which makes it the simplest and most informal way to hang a curtain.

Are tab top curtains hard to open and close?
Harder than any other heading, yes. The fabric loops grip the pole where rings glide, so the curtain gets walked across rather than pulled. On a window you open every day that becomes a genuine irritation. On a guest room or a child's room that is opened occasionally, it is fine.
Can tab top curtains be blackout?
The fabric can be, but the window will not be dark. Light passes over the pole in the gap between every loop, which puts a row of bright spots across the top of the window regardless of what the curtain is made of. For real darkness you want a pleated heading on a track, or eyelet with the pole fitted close to the wall.
Are tab top curtains cheaper?
Usually the least expensive heading we make. There is no heading tape, no hand-formed pleat and no rings or eyelets to buy, so both the material and the labour come down. It is a fair choice when the budget is tight and the window is not one you use constantly.
Can tab top curtains be motorised?
No. Motorisation needs a track and a carriage, and tab top hangs on a pole with the loops passing over it. If you want the window automated, you are choosing a track heading — pencil pleat, pinch pleat or wave.
How far apart should the tabs be?
Close enough that the fabric between them does not sag into a swag, spaced evenly across the width so every fold is the same. Too far apart and the curtain droops between loops and looks homemade; that spacing is set when the curtain is made and it is one of the things that separates a made-to-measure tab top from a shop-bought one.

Where it belongs
Tab tops read as casual, so they suit rooms that are casual: a child's bedroom, a kitchen window, a guest room, a beach-house-style interior. In a formal majlis they would look under-dressed, and we would steer you to pinch pleat instead.
The trade-off you should know about
Fabric loops have more friction on a pole than metal rings do. A tab top curtain does not glide — it moves in small tugs, and on a wide window that becomes mildly annoying by the second week. For anything over about two metres of track we suggest eyelets instead, which look similar from a distance and draw far better.
Loop spacing
Wide spacing gives deep, relaxed swags between loops; tight spacing gives smaller, neater folds. We set spacing to the drop and the weight of the fabric — a long chiffon panel needs closer loops than a short cotton one or the fabric sags between them.
Not for blackout
Like eyelets, tab tops leave the fabric scalloping away from the pole at the top, so light gets in. It is the wrong heading for a room that needs to be dark. It is a good one for a room that needs to be pleasant.
The rooms it suits
Tab top is a relaxed, informal heading: fabric loops over a visible pole, no rings, no pleats, nothing tailored about it. That makes it a good fit for a child's room, a guest bedroom, a holiday-home apartment or a balcony room dressed in light cotton — anywhere the point is that the window looks easy rather than dressed. It is the least expensive heading we make, because there is no tape, no hand-formed pleat and no ring hardware.
The closest alternative
If you like the informal look but want the curtain to actually draw, eyelet is the heading to compare it against: the same visible pole, rings instead of fabric loops, and a curtain that moves with one hand.
Why it does not suit a window you use every day
The trade-off is friction. Fabric loops slide over a pole far less freely than rings do, so a tab top curtain has to be walked across the window rather than pulled, and it will not run smoothly enough for a window you open every morning. It also cannot be motorised, and it will not give you a properly dark room — light passes over the pole between every loop. If the window is a bedroom you actually sleep in, look at pinch pleat or an eyelet blackout instead, and we would rather tell you that now than after it is made.

Draw it by hand, not by cord
Tabs grip the pole more than rings do, so a tab-top curtain is drawn by hand rather than pulled with a cord. On a wide or heavy curtain that becomes work; on a modest window it is a non-issue.
The drop is measured differently
The tabs add height above the fabric, so the pole sits higher than you might expect for the same finished drop. That is ours to calculate on the visit, but it is worth knowing why the pole ends up where it does.
Where it suits
Guest rooms, children's rooms and casual living spaces, usually in a mid-weight fabric. For a room that must be dark, a track-mounted blackout does the job far better.
