Eyelet curtains — ring top, grommet top, the terms are interchangeable — carry the fabric on metal rings punched through a reinforced heading. The rings slide directly on a pole, so the curtain draws with almost no friction and falls into deep, regular folds without any tape or hooks behind it.
It is the most practical heading we make. Anyone can lift one off a pole to wash it and put it back without help.

Will eyelet curtains make my bedroom fully dark?
Not completely. Light passes over the pole in the gap above the fabric between each ring — a row of small bright points across the top of the window. Fitting the pole close to the wall and above the frame reduces it a lot. If the room has to be genuinely black, a pleated heading on a track is the right answer.
Can I take eyelet curtains down myself?
Yes, and it is one of the real advantages of the heading. Lift the pole out of its brackets, slide the curtain off, and rehang it the same way — no hooks, no ladder work with small parts. That makes washing and seasonal changes straightforward.
What size pole do I need?
The eyelet diameter has to suit the pole diameter, which is why the two are specified together rather than bought separately. The pole must also be sized for the weight of a blackout curtain across your span — an undersized pole will bow in the middle. We size both at the visit.
Do eyelet curtains use less fabric?
Slightly. The heading gathers into deep, even folds at around 2.0 times the track width, similar to a pencil pleat, so there is no great saving in fabric — the saving is in the making, since there is no hand-formed pleat and no heading tape.
Can eyelet curtains be motorised?
No. Motorisation needs a track and a carriage, and eyelet curtains hang on a pole passing through the rings. If you want the window automated, choose a track heading — wave or pinch pleat — and use the pole elsewhere.

Why eyelets stay popular
Three reasons, in order of how often we hear them. It is easy to operate — one pull and the whole panel moves. It is easy to remove — lift and slide, no hooks to unpick. And it looks tidy without any effort, because the ring spacing forces even folds whether or not anyone dresses it.
The rod is part of the design
Unlike a track, which hides, an eyelet pole is meant to be seen. The pole diameter has to suit the ring size and the weight of the fabric — a heavy blackout on an undersized pole will bow in the middle over a long span, and no amount of extra brackets makes that look right. We size the pole to the drop and the span, and we add a centre support on anything over about 2.5 metres.
The one real limitation
An eyelet curtain cannot go fully light-tight at the top. The fabric scallops away from the pole between each ring, and light comes through those gaps. In a living room nobody notices. In a bedroom where you want genuine darkness at 5.30am in June, it is the wrong heading — a pinch pleat or a wave on a track with a proper ceiling fix will do what an eyelet cannot. We would rather tell you that now than after fitting.
