401 is our chiffon sheer — the light, fluid fabric most people call voile or net. It is doing a completely different job from the three blackout books. A sheer does not darken a room; it takes the hard edge off direct sun so the light arrives even and soft instead of as a bar across the floor, and it screens you from the street during daylight hours.
The book runs in two series. The Plain shades are a smooth, uniform chiffon. The TTL Sable shades carry a fine sand-like texture in the weave that shows when the fabric is backlit, giving the panel a subtle grain rather than a flat wash of light.
A sheer works during the day because the outside is brighter than the inside. After dark, with your lamps on and the sky black, that reverses completely and a sheer gives you very little privacy. People on ground floors discover this on the first evening. If the window needs privacy at night, the sheer goes on the front track and a blackout from 301, 302 or 303 goes behind it.
A sheer hung flat looks like a bedsheet on a wire. The soft gathered look comes from using more fabric than the window is wide — we cut chiffon at 2.2 times the track width as standard, so the panel falls into deep even folds and still looks full when it is fully drawn. Skimping there is the most common way a sheer ends up looking cheap, and it is invisible in a quotation unless you know to ask.
Chiffon is the one curtain fabric that genuinely benefits from regular washing, because it sits in the path of the air conditioning and catches every bit of airborne dust. Cold gentle cycle, minimal spin, then hang it back damp and let its own weight take the creases out. Do not tumble dry it and do not iron it hot.

Book 401 is our chiffon sheer range, 12 shades in plain and finer textured series. Sheers do the opposite job to the other three books: they keep a room bright while stopping people seeing in.
A sheer works because it is brighter outside than inside. In daylight it reads as opaque from the street and keeps the room usable; after dark, with lights on, it gives very little. That is not a fault — it is why sheer curtains in Dubai are nearly always paired with a blackout on a double track.
A plain chiffon gives an even wash of light. The textured series breaks the light up, hides marks better and reads as more substantial from across a room. Neither is more private than the other.
Sheers are cut at 2.2x rather than 2.0x, because thin fabric needs more gather to read as a curtain rather than a net. That is the main reason a sheer quote is not simply cheaper than a blackout one.
